Est. 1972 · Dunedin, New Zealand
For over 50 years, the Proctor family has built its reputation on honest dealing, genuine expertise, and care for the people we work with — buyers and sellers alike.
Our Story
Proctor Auctions was founded in Dunedin in 1972 by Ron and Doreen Proctor, who had a deep love of antiques and a conviction that auction was the fairest way to buy and sell them. Starting from modest rooms somewhere in the city, they built something that would outlast them — a business rooted in honest dealing and genuine knowledge of the things they sold.
Ron and Doreen set the values that still define the business today: give honest appraisals, treat every client with respect, and always put the quality of the auction before the quantity of the lots. Those standards haven't changed in over 50 years — they've simply been passed down.
Their son Ronald and his wife Sharyn took the business to new heights. In an ambitious move, they relocated the auction rooms to Timaru, growing Proctor Auctions into a nationally recognised name before returning to Dunedin in 1994. It was Ronald and Sharyn who truly took the business beyond its Otago roots — building the reputation and reach that Proctor Auctions enjoys across New Zealand today.
Today, Ronnie Proctor — the third generation — leads the business. He grew up in the auction rooms, inheriting not just the family business but the expertise and relationships built over five decades. Under Ronnie, Proctor Auctions has embraced online bidding through the Auction Mobility platform, reaching buyers across New Zealand and internationally — while keeping the personal, trustworthy character that has always set the business apart.
A family business built on expertise passed down — not just inherited.
Ron and Doreen founded the auction rooms in Dunedin in 1972 with a shared love of antiques and an unshakeable belief in honest dealing. Ron's eye for quality antiques and militaria, and Doreen's warmth with clients, set the tone for everything that followed. Their legacy is the culture of the business — still felt in every auction today.
Ronald and Sharyn were the generation who took Proctor Auctions national. In a bold move, they relocated the auction rooms from Dunedin to Timaru, building the business's profile well beyond Otago before returning to Dunedin in 1994. Their years in Timaru established Proctor Auctions as a nationally recognised name, deepening the specialisations in estate jewellery, militaria, and fine New Zealand antiques that define the business today.
Ronnie grew up surrounded by antiques, auction catalogues, and the steady rhythm of auction days. He took the helm with a deep knowledge of the business across every category — and the vision to take Proctor Auctions into the online era without losing what makes it special. Under Ronnie, the auction house now reaches bidders across New Zealand and around the world, while remaining exactly what it has always been: a family business that deals honestly and puts people first.
Principal Auctioneer · Third Generation
Ronnie has spent his whole life in the auction business. Growing up in the Proctor household meant growing up with antiques — learning their stories, understanding their value, and developing the instinct for quality that can't be taught in a classroom. He knows what things are worth because he's been around them his entire life.
As auctioneer, Ronnie brings energy and authority to the room — but it's his knowledge that buyers and sellers trust most. Whether you're asking for a no-obligation appraisal on your grandmother's jewellery collection or seeking advice on a significant piece of New Zealand militaria, Ronnie will give you a straight answer.
He's also the one to call when you're dealing with an estate and don't know where to start. Ronnie has helped hundreds of Dunedin families navigate the process — always with patience, honesty, and the practical expertise to get good results.
The values Ron and Doreen started with are the same ones guiding every auction today.
We'll always tell you what your items are realistically worth — even if that's not what you were hoping to hear. Honest advice upfront saves everyone time and builds real trust.
Four decades of handling antiques, jewellery, militaria, and art means we know the market well. That knowledge means better cataloguing, better estimates, and better results.
We're not a corporate auction house. We're a family business, and we deal with people the way you'd hope to be dealt with — with care, patience, and personal attention.
Dunedin is home. But our online auction platform means your items reach buyers across New Zealand and around the world — getting you the audience your pieces deserve.
"Ronnie and the team made the whole process so easy. I'd inherited a houseful of furniture and collectables and had no idea where to start. They came out, gave honest advice, and achieved results well above my expectations."
"I've been bidding online with Proctor Auctions for three years now from Wellington. The app makes it genuinely easy — I've picked up some wonderful pieces of New Zealand militaria that I never would have found otherwise."
"The free appraisal was genuinely no-obligation and they were refreshingly honest about what would and wouldn't sell well at auction. My grandmother's jewellery collection sold for far more than the dealer who'd offered to buy it outright."
Whether you're buying, selling, or just curious — we're always happy to talk.
